Gethsemane
The watercolor "Gethsemane" invites us to a profound spiritual and aesthetic reflection, in which the images of the sleeping apostles and the solitary figure of Christ in prayer intertwine. The scene evokes human fragility and divine strength.
In Deuteronomy 32:11-13, God is described as an eagle caring for its young, carrying them on its wings, an image of protection and guidance. Here, the apostles, huddled as if in a nest, symbolize this human dependence and vulnerability. Like chicks who have not yet learned how to fly, the disciples fail to stay awake, symbolizing their inability to fully comprehend the impending sacrifice.
On the other hand, Matthew 26:36-46 shows us Jesus in one of his most human and divine moments. Christ, in his solitude, prays and struggles with the imminence of the cross. His fervent prayer is a testimony to his total devotion and obedience to the Father, even in the midst of anguish. The figure of Christ in the background of the painting, surrounded by dark and vibrant colors, reflects this intense spiritual battle.
God works in humanity through its weakness, as the image of the apostles shows. Their sleep, although a result of weakness, is also an opportunity for the strength of Christ to be revealed. In their weakness, they are sustained by the prayer of Jesus, who, like the eagle of Deuteronomy, carries them on his wings toward redemption.
Thus, the watercolor not only captures a biblical moment, but also invites us to contemplate the beauty of human vulnerability and infinite divine compassion. In the stillness of the garden, we are reminded that, even in our moments of greatest weakness, we are sustained by God's love and grace.
