About the work

Seeking refuge

The watercolor “Seeking Refuge” evokes the passage from 1 Kings 19:9-15, where Elijah seeks refuge in a cave. This moment is profoundly symbolic on both a spiritual and anthropological level.

In the biblical narrative, the cave represents a place of protection and seclusion, where Elijah, pursued and defeated, encounters God in silence and solitude. Anthropologically, the cave has symbolized, since ancient times, the womb of the earth, a place of birth, transformation, and shelter. It is a space that offers security from external threats and an environment conducive to introspection and encountering the divine.

The watercolor captures this duality: the physical refuge and the space of spiritual transformation. The soft colors and abstract forms suggest an inner world where the barriers between the tangible and the intangible blur. The use of blue and yellow may symbolize the divine and enlightenment, respectively, while the brown of the character blends with the earth, suggesting an intimate connection between Elijah and his surroundings.

Elijah, like many spiritual seekers, finds in the cave not only protection, but also an opportunity to hear the "still, small voice" of God, which manifests not in the roar of the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, but in silence. Thus, the cave becomes a symbol of the inner search, where true refuge is the encounter with oneself and with the transcendent.

In short, "Seeking Refuge" invites us to reflect on the cave as a space of both shelter and spiritual transformation, where silence and introspection lead to a profound encounter with the divine.
