In the early days
Sitting in the back seat of the car as my mother drove me there, I looked out at the countryside and dreamed of the Mesozoic. I wasn't the first to do so. On the wall of a local fossil shop, hanging above the ammonoids and crinoids and ichthyosaur teeth, was a reproduction of the first illustration of a prehistoric landscape. Painted in 1830, it showed what the neighborhood might have looked like in the Jurassic. Palm trees emerged from bare rocks. Strange creatures, half dragon and half bat, flew over a churning sea. A very long-necked monster, attacked by an ichthyosaur, seemed to be emptying its bowels. It was all very sinister; and very exciting. (?)
